OS Compatibility
All Encore/ZIF G4 cards are compatible with your existing hardware and seamlessly integrate with your software:
  • Encore/ZIF G4 500 MHz supports from Mac® OS 8.0 through Mac OS X (Version 10.2.8 for Beige G3 systems and 10.4.x for G3 Blue & White and G4 PCI Graphics systems).
  • Encore/ZIF G4 700 MHz and 1.0 GHz models support from Mac OS 8.6 through Mac OS X Version 10.2.8 in Beige G3 systems.
  • Encore/ZIF G4 700 MHz and 1.0 GHz models support from Mac OS 9.2 through 10.4.x in G3 Blue & White and G4 PCI Graphics systems; OS 9.2 is required to perform firmware updates*.
*Encore/ZIF G4 700 MHz and 1.0 GHz upgrades require the installation of a supplied firmware patch; you must boot your computer in Mac OS 9.2 (installed on a local hard drive) in order to run the firmware updater application.
Replacing a G3 processor? When you upgrade with a G4, even greater performance improvements are possible with AltiVec™-enhanced applications running under Mac OS 9 or later.
OS X Update: All Encore/ZIF upgrades are fully compatible with any version of OS X that can be natively installed on your Macintosh. In some cases, users may need to download a small software updater. Most configurations are compatible as shipped by Sonnet.
Simple Installation
Installation happens in minutes simply as the Zero Insertion Force (ZIF) socket is specially designed to make upgrading effortless. The Encore hardware automatically configures the correct bus ratio without the need for switches.

**Power Macintosh G3 Blue & White users must disconnect any installed SCSI adapter cards and SCSI drive(s) from their computer before running the Sonnet Software installer and installing the Encore/ZIF G4. After disconnecting the SCSI card and drive(s), the computer must be booted from a hard drive connected to the internal ATA bus, and then the Sonnet installer (which installs files necessary to support Encore/ZIF G4) must be run. The SCSI card and drive(s) may be reconnected after the software installer has been run.
